Stem cell therapy is extraordinarily promising, since our bodies use different types of tissue- specific stem cells to fit a particular purpose, nowadays scientists all over the world are researching in new ways to harness stem cells and to use them in diagnosing various diseases.
A new study of mice led by Dr.Mayumi Ito, a stem cell biologists and dermatologists at NYU's Langone medical centre discovered a new groups of stem cells in fingernails that promote the regeneration of amputed finger tips in mice, which may also play a role in bone regeneration.
Ito and her coworkers found a class of stem cells beneath the nails. These cells reside in sensitive tissue under the bottom most part of the fingernail. This region is concealed by skin .Further more the report tells that this was due to the structural tissue around the nail producing a family of proteins called "Wnts"(wints) which helps nerve cells to produce growth promoting chemicals that renew the bone and tissue in the finger tip of mice. These reports suggest that nail stem cells and Wnt proteins are sufficient for limb regeneration.
