IMMUNOLOGY: PART 1
What is immune??
-Immune refers to having or producing antibodies(i.e. a person who is resistant to a particular infection).
Why to study immune system?
-Studying immune system is like knowing how your body recognizes and defends itself against bacteria,viruses and substances that appear foreign and harmful.
- Antigen and pathogen:Anything that causes an immune response is an antigen( antigen are molecules usually proteins on the surface of cells,bacteria or fungi) whereas pathogen is a disease causing antigen.
Hence the immune system is designated to protect the body from pathogens.
Lets us know its types;
a)Innate immunity:The main intention of innate immunity is that it protects you against all antigens.
-It is also called non-specific immunity which is the defense system.
-It involves barriers that keep harmful materials from entering your body.
-Some of the examples are cough reflex, skin oils,enzymes in tears and mucus(which traps bacteria and small particles).
b)Adaptive immunity:It refers to antigen-specific immune response which is more complex.
-In this type of immunity,firstly an antigen is recognized and then adaptive immune system creates an army of cells to attack antigen.
