Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) is a most advancing disorder of the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary movements.Things that we do on a daily basis, like breathing, running, walking, moving are controlled by the neuromuscular system.
-The parts of the brain that allow us to think, remember and learn are not affected by the disease but causes weakness with wide range of disabilities( such as ability to move their arms, legs and body).
-This disease is mostly seen in adults between 40 and 70 and extremely rare in children.
-Patients have increasing problem with moving, eating, swallowing, speaking(forming words) and even breathing may become difficult.Since no cure has been found yet, there are medicines that control the symptoms like difficulty in swallowing and muscle cramping.
-Current research on ALS leads to discover that changes in monocytes(a type of white blood cell which play a role in immune system function) are a biomarker for ALS.
